The Political History of Ukraine

Swedish archives hold a remarkable amount of sources on the political history of Ukraine. They include diplomatic documents and correspondence from the early modern period, as well as some unique and valuable maps from the same period. In this respect, Sweden occupies a unique position among European countries. The fact that Sweden has particularly important documents relating to Ukraine as a nation and the Ukrainian struggle for freedom is generally due to the fact that the Swedish Empire and the Ukrainian ruling class, both in the 17th and 18th centuries, forged strong diplomatic ties and alliances in order to assert themselves on the international stage during periods of conflict and war. International trade and shipping also played a major role in diplomatic talks.

The negotiations have generated a large amount of correspondence and other source material that is not found anywhere else in the world. This is particularly true of the period 1630–1730. These documents are undoubtedly also of great source-historical value for a number of other European countries, such as Poland, Turkey, Russia, the countries of the Baltic Sea region, Romania and Moldova, as well as for Sweden. What makes them particularly unique however is their significance for studies dealing with Ukrainian autonomy and independence. The Swedish National Archives also hold several volumes of the archives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which contain diplomatic documents relating to the recognition of the former Soviet states and their autonomy, as well as sources relating to the struggle for independence of the territories of Circassia, Georgia, Transylvania and others.
